NOTES:

  • The original concept of the game was conceived by Satoru Okada from Nintendo R&D1, who originally was looking to license and develop a game based on a popular Japanese strategy board game.
  • Okada admittedly wasn't much of a gamer, but he did enjoy the PC adventure games Ohoktsk ni Kiyu and Karuizawa Yuukai Annai.
  • When Okada put together the idea for Famicom Wars with Kenji Nishizawa, he enlisted the General Affairs Department to negotiate with SystemSoft, the copyright holders of the Daisenryaku series, to see if Nintendo could adapt and release their own version of a Daisenryaku game. But System Soft had already sold the Famicom porting rights to Bothtec.
  • When the licensing arrangement didn't go through, Nintendo R&D1 continued the pursue the idea under their own original brand.
  • Okada and R&D1 presented 10 different game titles to President Hiroshi Yamauchi, who instead suggested to just call it "Famicom Wars".
  • The Game Boy sequel was released three years after the original Famicom title.
  • While design and audio were handled by Nintendo R&D1, programming duties were handled by Intelligent Systems, who also contributed ideas to the overall game development.
