E3 Predictions - Discussion Thread

The most joyous time a year for all video game maniacs is days away now. I thought it would be fun to sort of get a thread going with some predictions, rumors, analysis and flat out dreams.

Confirmed

• Nintendo Software Technology is working on a new game. Could be 3DS or Wii U. Lots of hirings including one semi-famous veteran from Sonic Team.
• Retro Studios is working on a new game. Most likely Wii U. Hiring several staff with "FPS / Shooter" experience.
• New Super Mario Bros. Mii is a Wii U game and will be at E3.
• Pikmin 3 is a Wii U game and will be at E3.
• Miyamoto says there are also teams he is supervising working on smaller but equally important Wii U games.
• There is another side scrolling Super Mario game coming to 3DS this year.

Rumor

• Lucid Games is working on a PGR style first-party racer for Nintendo on the Wii U
• Silicon Knights and Nintendo are teaming up again for an Eternal Darkness game for Wii U.

I'm the only one who thinks this in the entire internet,but i'm pretty sure that retro studios is working in dkcr2,maybe for 3ds,the guys that they hired during the first game didn't have experience with plataformers.

Nst have staff to make a wii u game ? looking at their linkedin page and the credits of mvdk4 i coudn't find more than 10 artists.

Literally the only thing I really want is a new character-based franchise. Games like Pushmo feel so fresh to me because, well, they ARE fresh. Mario Galaxy 2, while an excellent game, did not have the same impact on me as a game like Kid Icarus: Uprising, which I felt was very original (even though it technically is not a new franchise). I've played all of Nintendo's franchises (all of them), and I'm desperate for something NEW >.> I'm confident that the innovation the Wii U offers we'll get something.

Icing on the cake would be:

• A new Smash Bros. featuring more pre-video game Nintendo representation and of course the new character from Nintendo's new franchise. I believe that there's a possibility we'll get a CG video but definitely not any gameplay since it's probably still very early in development. I don't think we'll be playing the next Smash for another few years.
• Retro's new game. Honestly I view Retro as being one of Nintendo's greatest assets. A new franchise by them would be fantastic but I'm one of the few people who would like to see their take on Zelda as well. Skyward Sword was somewhat disappointing to me but they could definitely do something unique with the franchise without dumbing it down.
• A new Yoshi's Island by Good-Feel would be awesome. If they could create a game with the graphics of Yoshi's Island's official artwork then that would be the best game ever. :P

PREDICTIONS:

• Wii U to be renamed. I'm fairly confident this will happen. The Wii's name, while controversial at first, didn't cause confusion… THIS did.
• The next console Zelda will not be mentioned, but something handheld related will be announced. I hope it's not a remake but I could see them trying to cash in on the post-Majora's Mask release craze. Each year that game seems to get more and more fans.
• Pikmin Wii U will be one of the main games they show off. They know fans want this title and the possibilities with better graphics makes me very excited. Miyamoto has been mentioning it more and more lately and it's definitely something they've already started development on.
• The 3DS Mario game will be more interesting than the Wii U Mario game. If the Wii U Mario game is indeed NSMB Mii, then I'll be very disappointed. We need a new artstyle because that's the one thing holding that series back.
• Third party support will still be quite abysmal. I'm pretty confident in this. In fact it's the thing I'm probably MOST confident about. EA is great and all but hardly enough.
• Neat first party applications will probably be announced. If they can come up with something as unique as Swapnote and Flipnote for the Wii U, then i'll be pretty happy.
• Obvious stuff: Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing and other previously announced 3DS games will be featured.
• Wii will NOT be featured at all.

Unfortunately I think the age of fictional character based or mascot games are dead. Only the truly famous and recognizable characters can survive in the market of today. If you look at Japan, most new successful intellectual properties focus on new activities or experiences outside of the traditional core game mechanic. If you look at the West, most successful properties are very violent or film type of experiences.

What can Nintendo really do. I feel if they make a new "character" based game, that it literally has to skew to young children. Which still seems like a small peanuts demographic now that Nintendo has discovered soccer moms and casual adults are capable of buying games.

In general. I would imagine this is going to be the craziest and biggest E3 ever.

Grand Theft Auto 5. Halo 4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. God of War 4. Yikes!

It's going to be the biggest and craziest E3 ever for one reason: the Wii U. GTA? Halo? MGS? GOW? These have already been revealed and while gameplay will be great, there is nothing that can compare to the attention that will be given to Nintendo from all sectors of the gaming community. This could either be absolutely disastrous or tremendous. I really don't see there being a middle ground… at all. Nintendo fans excited is one thing to behold but when they're disappointed… You had better watch out. The Wii U reveal was an atrocious cluster of nonsensical videos. I honestly had a headache after the conference was over trying to understand what I just saw, because Nintendo screwed it up: they just didn't know how to communicate what the Wii U was. They've had a year to learn from their mistakes and you had better believe that by the end of the conference we'll know EXACTLY what the Wii U is. And, like I said, this could result in tears: perhaps positive… perhaps negative (probably tears of joy: let's hope at least). All I know is that they're definitely saving SOMETHING. What that is I have no clue, but there will definitely be a surprise. Probably a very big one.
