Fire Emblem: Genealogy Of The Holy War is a turn-based RPG strategy game released in 1996 exclusively in Japan for the Super Nintendo. During each turn, a character from each battalion is selected to make a move across a grid designed map. Battles are handled automatically depending on the characters turn, position, and statistics. Gain experience during battles and upgrade each character's weapons to stand a better chance If a character falls in battle then they are gone for good, but if the lead protagonist is defeated then the game is over. Lead the hero army to the enemy base and defeat the general in each map to successfully advance. New additions to this installment include assigning special skills to individual units, character class exclusive skills, and hereditary skills being passed on to offspring.

The kingdom of Grandbell has enjoyed peace for many years when without warning, the armies of Prince Gandolf of Verdane descended on Jungby Castle, and the troops kidnapped Lady Edin. News quickly spread of the invasion, and several groups of resistance set out to save the land including the fearless Lord Sigurd. The resistance armies soon uncover a sinister uprising of dark evil and the plans of new ruthless dark lord.
