To add and clarify:

SRD programmed Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race (1987) for Nintendo EAD (Nakago, Soejima).

HAL programmed F1 Race (1984) for Nintendo R&D2 (Satoru Iwata).

The game lists him as a planner, I'm sure he was kind of saying "I got to do some art like the old days [while still being a senior guy]". So he did both really.

On an unrelated note, the wording here dont make it seems that Hino role in Mario Maker is more of a artist, than a planner ?

"That's right. I've been involved with the series from the first game through Pikmin 3 for Wii U. Later, for development of Super Mario Maker, I was involved with implementing art I had done for Super Mario World."

Makes perfect sense!!!

Shimizu worked on Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race.. was working on a sequel (Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race 2) that didn't release… but still worked on Famicom Grand Prix: 3D Hot Rally.

Hino worked on that unreleased Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race 2…

Actually.. it probably wasn't a sequel.. but PART 2. Nintendo use to make much of their FCD games Part 1 an Part 2.

Developer Interview Volume 5:

Super Mario World was your first job, wasn't it?
Hino: It was my second year at the company, and it was the first game I worked on that went out into the world.
Does that mean there were games that didn't go out into the world?
Hino: Yes. As a designer, I worked on a sequel to Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race for the Family Computer Disk System.

Developer Interview Volume 2:

What kicked off development of F-ZERO?
Shimizu: The inspiration was Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race for Famicom, a racing game from an overhead point of view. We made a sequel to that and showed it to staff at Nintendo of America, but they totally bashed it!

It means that:
Hino says it was his second year at Nintendo when Super Mario World was released in 1990, that is, he joined Nintendo in 1988 and is not involved in Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race released in 1987.
And "sequel to Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race" project was supposed to be Hino's first and unreleased work, is not related to Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally at that time, and the project was canceled and shifted to F-Zero.

Well, Tezuka says that they started development of Super Mario World on 1988 and he left all of the graphic design to Hino, so surely he was also involved since the beginning. Also, according to Hino, that was the first game he worked on that "went out into the world" (not really sure what he means by that, but probably that it got an international release), and he also worked there on his second year at the company. So, if he didn't do anything in between the development of FGP: F1 Race (finished before October 1987) and Mario World (started probably after the release of SMB3 on October 1988), then I see a 1-year gap there when he wouldn't be involved in any game (3D Hot Rally was also released in October 1988). But I'm not sure.

By the way, I think Hino has also been credited on other games like Yoshi's Cookie and Link's Awakening probably only for original designs (he doesn't appear in any Link's Awakening developer interview, but there's a Yoshi doll in the game and other Mario character cameos).

I've been looking at that.

Hino says he joined 1987 (April) and F1 Grand Prix released October 1987. I think the tricky part is that it's a sequel to F1 Race (1984) on the Famicom. Maybe that's why it sounds like "Sequel to Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race".

Plus, the credits indicate Shimizu and Hishida were the designers for Hot Rally. Which makes sense since it was programmed by HAL and they were both working on the Golf games together. No Hino is hinted in the credits, but some back up artists have been omitted from games during those times it seems. (Since Eguchi claims he worked on Zelda 2 and his name isn't in the credits).

Shimizu worked on both. Which is why he made Star Wars Episode Racer 1 on GBC which is exactly like Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race on FCD. Top down racer.

What do you think?
